Site preparation & hard landscaping

Stone walling is our trade, but most walls need ground work before a single stone is laid. We take on the clearance, excavation and levelling around your wall so the whole job is handled by one team.

Hedge & tree removal

Old hedgerows, self-set saplings and ivy are the most common reason a boundary wall has pushed out of line. We cut back and remove the growth along the run of the wall, grind out or dig out the stumps, and clear the roots that are working into the core, so the rebuilt wall is not pushed apart again a few seasons later. Arisings are chipped or taken away, and we leave a clean working corridor either side of the wall.

Ground excavation & footings

A dry stone or mortared wall is only as good as what it sits on. We dig out trenches to a sound bearing, remove soft spots and old rubble, and lay compacted hardcore or a concrete footing where the ground or the height of the wall calls for it. Spoil is barrowed or machined out and muck-away is arranged, including on tight cottage plots where access is by hand or mini-digger only.

Patios & garden terracing prep

Where a retaining wall creates a new level, we prepare the ground behind and in front of it at the same time: cut and fill to the finished levels, drainage and free-draining backfill behind the retaining face, sub-base laid and compacted ready for paving, and terracing stepped to suit a sloping Cotswold garden. Doing this with the walling avoids a second mobilisation and keeps the levels right first time.
