Understanding Dry Stone Walling & Repair Costs in the Cotswolds
Every wall is quoted on its own merits, but the ranges below give you an honest ballpark for the work we're asked about most — before we've even seen the site.
Average price ranges
Indicative figures for typical Cotswold walling jobs. Your fixed written quote may be lower or higher depending on the factors below.
Ballpark
Localised Structural Repairs & Root Damage
£600 – £1,200
Gapping-up collapsed sections, re-seating displaced stone and repairing root or ivy damage to an otherwise sound wall. Usually a day or two on site.
Ballpark
Small Garden Wall Rebuilds (3 – 5m)
£1,200 – £1,800
A failed cottage garden or boundary run taken down and rebuilt in matching limestone — new footings where needed, lime pointing and copings reset or replaced.
Ballpark
Full Cottage Boundary Builds (8 – 10m)
£2,200 – £3,500
Longer boundary walls rebuilt properly: sorted stone, through-stones, tight hearting and finished with combers or coping to match the original style.
What Factors Influence Your Quote?
Site access. Narrow lane parking, tight cottage gardens and steps all add handling time. Walls right by the roadside are the quickest to work on.
Stone reuse vs new supply. Reusing the wall's own stone keeps costs down; buying in matching Cotswold or reclaimed limestone adds to the price per metre.
Footing preparation. Walls that have failed because the foundation has spread need the footings dug out and rebuilt — more ground work, more time, higher quote.
Lime mortar materials. Where a wall is mortared, lime mortar costs more than cement and needs careful mixing and curing — but it's the right material for Cotswold stone.
